Description St. Marguerite is mostly sought after as a patron in a variety of familial situations desiring her intercession: healing, troubled marriages, widows, victims of adultery, and those with troublesome in-laws. Marie-Marguerite d’Youville was born in Quebec 15 October 1701 and died 23 December 1771. She was the founder of the Sisters of Charity of the Hôpital Général de Montréal, also known as the Grey Nuns. She was the first Canadian-born saint and canonized by Pope John Paul II in 1990. The process for her canonization included a review of a medically inexplicable cure of acute myeloid leukaemia in a patient after prayers to Sister Marguerite. The patient is the only known long-term survivor of this disease in the world. In 1722, she married a fur and alcohol trader who was unreliable and selfish. To make matters worse, she was living with a domineering and harsh mother-in-law. as if a captive in her own home. Her husband was adulterous on his work-related travels, but she dutifully cared for him through his final illness. He died in 1730. In 1737, she rented a house in Montreal where she gave hospitality to women in need. She and three companions made private religious vows. They broke social barriers by taking in the needy. Because of this the women were scorned, slandered and persecuted. She was accused of trafficking alcohol with Indigenous people, as her husband had done. She was accused of drunkenness and even prostitution. They were mocked by friends and relatives, and even by the poor they helped. Some called them “les grises”, which can mean “the grey women” but which also means “the drunken women”, in reference to d’Youville’s late husband’s career as a bootlegger.
